Help!--A call to all knitters (and crocheters)

Apparently our advertising department (which doesn't even exist) has been a little too effective--we have over 350 people on our waiting list! People are hearing about it from websites, newsletters, friends, Facebook, even counselors and treatment centers! We are only three knitters, and we're not always able to crank them out as fast as we would like...not all of us knit at the same speed, sometimes life happens and something gets in the way, etc. So this is a call out to all you capable knitters and crocheters (is that a word?) who have a little extra time on your hands and would like to help us out by knitting a buddie or two...or more! :) There is a link on our blog (it's http://recoverybuddies.blogspot.com/2008/10/those-interested-in-knitting-buddies.html for those of you who want to jump right to it!) for anyone who wants to help make a buddie. Do you remember that we posted on the FB page a week or more ago that we would be having some promotional things coming up that we need your help with and to watch the blog for more information? Well here it is, the awaited blog with all the information.

We here at the Recovery Buddies Project are working on a few promotional projects. We have plans that we are very excited about that require us to have some promotional materials. For example, one is we are going to try to run for a Pepsi Refresh Grant in December.

We are trying to put together a brochure and a promotional video.

The video is a bit time sensitive, we are hoping to have it together so we can run for a Pepsi refresh grant in December. If you are going to send us things for it, please have it to us ASAP.

What it comes down to is this; we need to get our name out there. We want to be able to help more people and continue to help people, but right now we are lacking in funding and knitters/crocheters. We are hoping that some of the promotional projects we are doing will help.

However, WE NEED YOUR HELP! We want you all to be included in these promotional projects. So here are a few things we need specifically, and I have broken it down into groups so hopefully everyone can find a way they can participate.

PLEASE NOTE: For anyone that sends us comments/video/pictures/ ect. Please tell us somewhere in the email that it is ok for us to use what you have sent us. Please also let us know if we can use your name (first name only), or if you would prefer for us to change it. Without these things, we will not be able to use your comments/photos/video clips.We would also appreciate if you would tell us what state you are from.

Have you received a buddie from us?

We would LOVE to hear from you. Comments are always welcome. We would love to hear what receiving a buddie meant to you. Or what your buddie means to you now as you are working on recovery. Any comments are welcome.

We would love it as well if you would be willing to send us photos of you and your buddie. These make our day. It makes it real to us to see the buddie with the person. Don’t feel comfortable sending us a photo with you in it? That’s ok too. Be creative! Maybe take a photo of your buddie at your favorite place or doing something you love (like at the park, the coffee shop, in your bedroom, surfing facebook, be creative with this!) We need lots of photos for this video. Seriously, overload our inbox with photos, we’d love it. We’d love to have so many photos that we won’t be able to use them all.

Also, and I know this one is asking a lot… For the video we would really like to have video clips of you talking about what you buddie means to you. Would anyone be willing to do this? Please email us and let us know!!

Have you sent us comments/photos before? PLEASE let us know if it is ok if we use these if you have not already. We need to know this.

Have you knitted/crocheted a buddie for us?

We would also love to hear from knitters and crocheters! Was it rewarding to make a buddie for us knowing you would be helping someone else? Please tell us about it!

Do you attend a knitting/crochet group? What about suggesting to your group a Knit-A-Long/Crochet-A-Long for the Recovery Buddies Project?

*Would anyone be up for putting brochures in places where they would be seen by people that could use a buddie/people willing to make them for us? Like a “street team” of sorts, help us get our name out there and what we do. Ideas for places would be like mental health offices, yarn stores, ect.

*Are you a mental health professional that would be willing to put some brochures in your office (we might even send a buddie along as an example to sit in your office if you’d request it)? Please let us know through email, we are trying to get a general idea of where we could put these brochures and who we could give them to.

Meet Michael

Michael is a ball of energy and is a real whiz at computers. He is very protective of his friends and always stands up for others. Michael loves movies that have sword fights because, well, sword fights are just awesome. He also would really like to take fencing lessons, since that's the next best thing to a sword fight. Meet Kitty

Kitty is a bit outspoken but very kind. She is a great artist but also likes to do fun things like color in coloring books and do connect-the-dots and such. Kitty likes to write letters and usually fills the margins with stickers and cute little doodles. Kitty LOVES stickers. Especially shiny ones and the scratch and sniff kind...although the puffy ones and the fuzzy ones beat all. When no one is looking, Kitty will dance like crazy even if no music is on. She has found her own rhythm in her life and she is learning how to dance to it!

He knows how to turn the computer on, and that's about as far as it goes. So you might want to teach him a few things. Jeremiah loves the sound of rain pitter-pattering on the roof and his favorite smell is fresh laundry. He's a bit of an odd duck, but he's okay with that.

However, she can be a bit of a smart aleck and sometimes likes to see if there are any shortcuts to take. Jacinta is very playful and energetic and hates going to bed on time. There's always something to do! She loves to paint, draw, color, read, tell knock-knock jokes (although they usually don't make much sense), run in circles, write silly songs...the list is endless! But if you sing her a lullaby, she will fall fast asleep!

Tina also has a love of shoes. She could spend all day in the shoe store. It might be a good idea to just avoid the shoe department completely if you go shopping with her.

Skyler loves glitter and all things that sparkle. She loves to do crafts if she can add glitter to the project... just don't let her do that on her own because they last time I did she made a mess. She and it all over herself and the floor. She still has it all over her in this picture.

Skyler is not a Twilight fan though. She doesn't think vampires should sparkle. (I teased her about this when I saw she had glitter all over her and she didn't find it at all funny)

Skyler really likes Mac and Cheese. I think it might partly have to do with it being orange, she really likes that color.

Audrey shouldn’t drink any caffeine. She really loves tea, but if she drinks it make sure that it is caffeine free. She will be up for day and be very hyper if you let her have any caffeine. So watch out for that!

Hailey loves bright colors, especially orange. Bright colors make her happy.

Josh has a very kind and warm heart even if he doesn't always show it.

Elisa likes to create. She loves art and being able to express herself through it. She really loves painting. I let her paint once and oh what a mess she made! so if you decide to let her paint, make sure she cleans up after herself!

Elisa loves root beer floats. But even a little sugar makes her really hyper! So only let her have it in moderation!

Elisa loves to color. She is insisting that I let her bring along her favorite coloring page for the both of you to color together. She is so excited to meet you!

I am very excited to start knitting and just went out this morning and got my supplies all ready today!! I will give you all a little background about me, I am currently 25 years old, from VA. I have my bachelor's degree in Psych and I am hoping to start my Master's in Art Therapy sometime soon :) I am in recovery from and Eating Disorder, mainly Anorexia, and was diagnosed at age 17. Claire loves nature and being in nature. She loves the spring when everything is in bloom and full of life. Her favorite flower is a tulip.

Liz loves peanut butter. A lot. She will just eat it by the spoon if you let her. Silly girl.

Liz really loves action movies. Her favorite is the Matrix trilogy. She asked me if you would watch those with her, but I told her that she would just have to wait and ask you when she gets there. She said that it's ok if you don't want to. She just really wants to spend time with you.

Watch out though, cause she can be a bit of a prankster. She though it was really funny to switch my salt and sugar out the other day.

Ruth, or Ruthie, loves all things that glitter. She likes to play dress up and pretend that she is a princess. However, she tells me that she doesn't need a prince to come rescue he from the dragon, she says that she can slay the dragon herself.

Ruthie loves to color. She told me she is hoping that you will like to color too. She wants to color a picture with you when she get there. She is bringing you one to color with her. :).

Ruthie loves to cuddle so give her lots of cuddles for me. And she is afraid of the dark, so be sure to hold her at night so she doesn't get to scared.

Edwin has problems with procrastinating. He always waits until the very last possible moment to do things. But he always gets things done in the end.

Edwin loves caffeine a little to much. He is slightly addicted to it. But he tends to rely on it when he procrastinates and has to pull all-nighters to get things done. Maybe you can help in break his addiction. You might want to start limiting his caffeine.

For those of you that have not discovered this amazing resource yet, I want to tell you a little about it.

Andrea Roe is a pretty amazing woman. She FOUGHT her eating disorder and WON! How encouraging is that? That someone can fight "ED" and win?! Even if you personally don't struggle with an eating disorder, I think its pretty awesome to see someone overcome anything.

For those of you that do struggle with ED, she puts together a awesome support letter every month. It is filled with "personal recovery stories, inspirational sayings, special guest interviews with eating disorder experts, speakers and survivors, useful recovery and body image tips, inspiring poems and artwork, healing information, give-aways, and more."

I've personally found it to be a great source of support and encouragement. And it's FREE!!

Aren't you excited? It's about time I'm home. I've been away 10 months. Did anyone miss me?

So I'm REALLY excited to get things up and going again. YAY! Sorry for the hiatus. But it was necessary. Things might be a little slower than I'd like still though, because as I'm sure you all know, Allison is in treatment. And Allie is a busy college student.

Allison is currently at Well of GRACE Ministries, I just graduated that program and let me tell you she is gonna do great. She and I got to spend some awesome time together there and it was really hard to leave her behind, but I know she is gonna do great. Keep her in your thoughts, and I'm SURE she'd love mail ;).

Allie is a busy college student again. She is still knitting when she can find time. But that is hard for her to do, I know.

But I'm HOME!! Hopefully I'll get things picking up again soon.

As of right now, as you may have noticed, the donation button is down. I'm working on getting a few things rearranged and I'll have it back soon hopefully. Part of why things have been so slow is lack of funds :(.

Also, I need knitters!! Anyone here knit? know anyone that does? Think you'd like to be a part of this? Email me! We would love for you to help.

Some news type stuff.

I just have a couple news items on the agenda to discuss.

1. The one year anniversary for recovery buddies passed a couple weeks ago(Aug 22nd). So in honor of that we would like to send a notebook around to interested parties for people to write it, tell their recovery stories, give words of wisdom, and of hope. There will be some rules for this notebook. So if you are interested watch for a blog post about it in the next week or so- or shoot us an email with " recovery notebook" as the subject.

2. We now require consent form for minors to receive buddies. The consent form actually just gives you(minors) permission to give us(the team) your contact form. All minors who haven't received buddies yet will have to submit a signed form. If you need one, and have not been emailed one yet please email us.

3. Due to mailing issues, if you are sending a box of donation buddies, we strongly recommend that you add a tracking number so Allie can confirm delivery. If you want information on how to send us donation buddies, feel free to email us.
